Our next home game brings us a tough opponent from Perm. What should we expect from «Parma,» a team sitting in the VTB United League’s top eight? How can we counter their strengths? Let’s dive in.
The Perm Threat
After a rough start to the 2024/25 season, «Parma» has found its rhythm, becoming a team that commands respect from every opponent. Under Evgeny Pashutin’s leadership, they’ve developed into a cohesive, precise squad capable of challenging even the league’s top contenders. Currently, they hold 8th place in the standings with 8 wins and 11 losses.
Just last week, «Parma» defeated «Lokomotiv-Kuban» (93:88) and «Uralmash» (88:85)—both for the second time this season. They also gave «CSKA» a run for their money in a high-scoring battle (101:93). However, consistency has been their challenge, with surprising losses to «Enisey» (89:61, 64:81) and «Avtodor» (67:59, 71:76).
Evgeny Pashutin’s Squad
«Parma» relies on a mix of experienced and emerging talent. Veteran Russian players like Alexander Zakharov (11.1 points, 3.9 rebounds), Stanislav Ilnitsky (5.5 points, 4.6 rebounds), and Timofey Yakushin (5.9 points) provide stability, while their international roster shines with standout performers.
Garrett Nevels (15.5 points, 4.2 assists) has found his rhythm in Perm after his stint with «Uralmash.» Former «Astana» player Royce Hamm (15.6 points, 8.1 rebounds) remains a dominant force under the basket. Alex Hamilton (12.8 points, 5.1 assists) was recently named to the VTB United League’s symbolic five for December 9–15, alongside top names like Aleksej Avramovic (CSKA) and Marcos Knight (UNICS).
Emerging Russian talents also play significant roles, with Lev Svinin (21 minutes), Alexander Shashkov (21 minutes), and the recently recovered Samson Ruzhentsev, who promises to be a player to watch.
Head-to-Head
The two teams have faced off 18 times in the VTB League, with «Parma» holding the edge with 11 wins to «Astana’s» 7. The last victory for «Astana» came on October 13, 2022, with a score of 84:72.
Injury Challenges
Both teams are coping with injuries, but «Astana» faces a particularly tough situation heading into this game. Key players like Daniel Utomi, Starx, Sarsengaliyev, and Motovilov are missing from action and, though listed, will not take the court.
To make matters worse, Orazbekov and Desyatnikov are fighting high fevers, while captain Rustam Murzagaliev is still recovering from illness. Forward Danila Pokhodaev's participation remains questionable as he works his way back from an injury.
Despite these setbacks, the team is ready to fight until the final buzzer and is counting on support from the fans.
Comments
Gleb Plotnikov, Acting Head Coach of «Astana»:
«Parma is a team capable of beating any opponent, and they’ve proven that more than once this season. It won’t be an easy match for us. We’re battling injuries and illnesses, but the players who are available must show resilience and cooperate.»
Vadim Shcherbak, Shooting Guard for «Astana»:
«Parma is a strong opponent with talented players, both international and Russian. This game is a new challenge for us, and for Kazakhstan’s players, it’s a chance to prove themselves. We’ll prepare as best we can, follow the coach’s plan, and fight as one team.»
