Over the past year, Astana has continued to focus on developing local talent while adapting to changes in the country’s sports funding model. At the same time, the club has successfully expanded its commercial partnerships, creating new opportunities to strengthen the roster and compete at a higher level.
Since joining the league in 2011, Astana has been the VTB United League’s only representative from Central Asia. Over the years, the competition has played a key role in the club’s growth and has provided Kazakh players with the opportunity to compete against some of the strongest teams in the region.
The club’s return comes at an important time. In recent seasons, Astana has placed a strong emphasis on player development, giving young Kazakh players valuable experience through the VTB Youth League and increased opportunities with the senior team.
That process is already beginning to bear fruit. Oleg Balashov has returned to the club, Vladimir Ivanov is expected to join the roster, and several players developed within Astana’s youth system are preparing to make the step up to the first team. The club has been building towards this moment for several years, and the next phase of that journey starts now.
Astana also remains one of the key contributors to the Kazakhstan national team. With a new FIBA World Cup qualification cycle on the horizon, regular competition at a higher level will be an important part of helping Kazakh players continue their development and gain valuable international experience.
The club’s recent success in FIBA WASL has further highlighted that progress. Astana advanced to the Final 8 and will continue its campaign in September 2026, competing against some of the best teams from across West Asia and the Gulf region.
Throughout its history, Astana has consistently represented Kazakhstan on the international stage. Today, the club remains the only team to have represented the country in major club competitions in both Europe and Asia.
Returning to the VTB United League is more than just a return to competition. It is another step forward in the club’s long-term vision — developing players, raising standards, and continuing to grow the game of basketball in Kazakhstan.
